Economic map analysis
In my map that I have created, I used data that showed the amount of people employed in the labor force. I chose this because it was something that I thought would be interesting to see not only where the most jobs are, but to see where they are in relation to where my place of residence is. Being a business student that will be hopefully graduating this coming May, seeing where jobs are in relation to my place of residence seemed to be a good fit for this Economic data mapping project. Where my data was found was on the website and data we used during class. It was done by the U.S. Census Bureau on the American FactFinder website. The 5 year economic data we used merged with the New York State County data you provided us with. The date of the data was 2010.
After mapping the data, and trying to get a good key so that the majority of the states are not affected by the outliers, like Queens for example. It was a task easier said than done. The patterns that I saw once the map looked presentable were kind of expectable. The majorities of jobs are located around the major cities and thus so was the amount of people employed in the work force. The opposite can be said for areas not near major cities, like Hamilton County. Hamilton County is located in the Adirondacks and has the fewest amount of people employed in the work force. This could be because the people of Hamilton County need to leave the county to find jobs because there are none with the county boarders or there just isn’t a large amount of people living in Hamilton County, which also seems to be a very logical answer.
There is one area in particular that could be a great area to look at to see where jobs are in relation to work force employment and that area is the area around Binghamton, which is located in Broome County. The area, the four counties, Tioga, Cortland, Chenango, and Delaware, around Broome County has on average about 11,000 people employed in the work force while Broome County itself has 44,130 people employed in the work force. This could be because Broome has a big city that the people around that county work there by commuting.
Another potential draw that is included on the map is the average wage of each county. The common person might think that where there are the fewest amount of jobs, there will be the lowest wage amount. This doesn’t seem to be the case in New York State. The highest labor force employment county, Kings County, has an average wage of $28,100, but the lowest labor force employment county, Hamilton County, has an average wage of $23,900. The county with the lowest average wage is Allegany County at $11,700, while the county with the highest average wage is Rockland County at $64,200. This could be due to the quality of businesses in the area and those businesses ability to pay their employees better than up start or smaller businesses that might be located in remote counties. This map seems to be a good representation of how the labor force and average income are sort of representative with only a few outliers.
