New York State County Pregnancy rates and statistics
This information that was mapped shows the total
pregnancies and teenage pregnancies by type and resident per county in New York
State in 2010. The census information is published by the New York State
Department of Health. The map
shows the data per county for; total number of pregnancies, teen pregnancies, total
rates, live births,
and also included abortions and spontaneous fetal deaths. The data from the
State Department of Health census was geo-referenced to map the information to
show up for all of New York State. The highest total rate of pregnancies for
teens is in the Bronx at 100 per 1,000 teen. The data is shown represented by a
darker shade of red signifying a higher number of total pregnancies. The
highest number of total pregnancies was in Kings County at 72,549, followed by
Queens and Bronx Counties. The highest number of induced abortions was in Kings
County at 25,989. Not surprisingly,
Kings County has the highest number of spontaneous fetal deaths at 4,762. This could just be because of the higher
population rate or could have to do with environmental justice areas in the
city due to pollution or food consumption.
The data shows areas of New York City as having the
highest rates for total number of pregnancy for all age groups as well as
abortion rates and live births. This is because there are more people in these
counties, which lead to an overall higher number of occurrences. The area with
the lowest amount of live births is Schuyler County, with 168. This county is
in a more rural area and in the Southern Tier, which correlates to a lower
population overall. The map highlights
how population rates will increase in areas of already high population and tend
to decrease in areas of lower population, disregarding any outmigration
patterns. If we take into consideration migration patterns, the areas of lower
population will continue to be lower, if those live births move out of the
county and into higher populated areas. Monroe and Erie Counties stand out in terms of
higher total pregnancy rates because they are home to big cities like Rochester
and Buffalo. Another set of interesting
information was Lewis and Yates Counties are tied at 31 induced abortions, with
Schuyler at 35. These three counties also contain the lowest number of total
pregnancies, which correlates to the low number of abortions. The data published by the New York State Department of Health was geo referenced to fit onto a map of New York State. The rates are shown per county for a number of information concerning pregnancy rates. Areas of higher population tend to stay with a higher population and contain higher number of live births. The information on the map shows counties with lower populations having an overall lower amount of live births, abortions, and fetal deaths for all ages.
